There is only one. There was only one. There will only ever be one.
Chapter I: The Price of Everything
The arena smelled like sweat and ambition. Both of which, Kirsten Scott had in abundance.
She stood in the gorilla position — that threshold between the world everyone else lived in and the world that was hers alone. The world where she was not a woman, not a person, not even a name. She was a force. An inevitability. The One.
"Thirty seconds," the production assistant said, not meeting her eyes. Nobody ever met her eyes anymore. Not since she'd looked at Tommy Crane the same way she looked at every opponent and he'd gone home and quit the business. She didn't mean to do it. She just couldn't help seeing through people.
Valeria Voss was waiting in that ring. Valeria, who had been telling anyone who would listen that this was her moment. That Kirsten Scott was a chapter in her story. That "The One" was just a nickname, not a prophecy.
Kirsten almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
The pyro fired. The crowd erupted. And Kirsten Scott walked through the smoke like she owned the oxygen in every room she'd ever entered — because she did. She had bought it. With every loss she'd refused to accept, every bone she'd reset herself, every 3 AM where she'd chosen the gym over the grief.
This wasn't a match. This was a coronation.
She just hadn't told Valeria yet.
The bell rang.
And "The One" went to work.
